Here’s what many people don’t realize: when someone buys silver in the metals market they receive a hunk of metal, not something that can be made into your jewelry.  This metal needs to be refined and transformed into wire, sheet, and casting grain first.

Step 1: Alloying

Step 4: Rolling for Sheet

To create sheet metal, the ingot is passed through a rolling mill repeatedly. Each pass reduces the thickness gradually. Between passes, the metal must be annealed again because rolling work-hardens the silver, making it brittle.

This process continues until the desired thickness is achieved (anywhere from 0.3mm for delicate work to 2mm for substantial pieces).

Step 5: Drawing for Wire

To create wire, the process is different. The ingot is first rolled into a thick rod, then pulled (drawn) through progressively smaller holes in a draw plate. Like rolling, this work-hardens the metal, requiring periodic annealing.

Wire can be drawn to incredibly fine gauges, from thick 10-gauge wire (2.5mm) down to delicate 28-gauge (.3mm) for intricate details.

Step 6: Final Preparation

Once sheet or wire is created, it’s cleaned, pickled (dipped in acid to remove oxidation), and prepared for the jeweler’s hands. Only then does the actual design work begin: sawing, forming, soldering, texturing, and finishing.  The price we pay is much higher than the spot price to account for the refining and milling.
